June: Chasing Higher Ground

There is something timeless about mountain riding.
The rhythm is simple: climb, descend, repeat. Progress is measured not by speed but by patience. The higher you go, the quieter things become. The distractions of everyday life seem to fade with every switchback.
June is the perfect month to seek out those experiences. Snow has retreated from many of the high passes, daylight stretches late into the evening, and the season is still young enough that the roads retain a sense of discovery.
This month's selections celebrate that feeling.
Europe / Rest of World Spotlight:
Sellaronda Bike Day — Dolomites, Italy
(Road)
Some cycling events are races. Others are celebrations.

Sellaronda Bike Day falls firmly into the latter category.
On selected days each year, several of the roads connecting the legendary mountain passes around the Sella Massif are closed to motor vehicles, creating a rare opportunity to experience the Dolomites entirely by bike. Riders are free to travel at their own pace, stopping whenever they choose to admire the scenery, enjoy a mountain hut, or simply catch their breath.
There are no timing chips, no podiums, and no pressure.
Instead, there are towering limestone peaks, perfectly engineered roads, and the shared experience of thousands of cyclists enjoying one of the world's great mountain landscapes.

The beauty of Sellaronda Bike Day is that it reminds us that not every memorable ride requires competition. Sometimes the route itself is enough.

June in the Dolomites feels less like an event and more like a pilgrimage.
United States Spotlight:
Crusher in the Tushar — Beaver, Utah
(Mixed Surface/ Gravel)
If the Dolomites offer elegance, Crusher in the Tushar offers grit.

Set in southern Utah's Tushar Mountains, this event blends pavement, gravel, and relentless climbing into one of North America's most distinctive endurance rides.
The challenge is obvious. Riders spend much of the day at altitude, climbing through terrain that feels vast and remote. But beyond the difficulty lies the attraction.
The landscape is immense.

Snow-capped peaks linger on distant horizons. Aspen forests line sections of the route. Long climbs open onto views that stretch for miles.
Crusher isn't just a test of fitness—it is an invitation to experience a part of the American West that many travelers never see.

June in Utah reminds us that some of the best roads are the ones furthest from everything else.
Lifestyle Spotlight:
Salzkammergut — Alpine Lakes & Mountain Roads
(No event required)

While the Dolomites often grab the headlines, neighboring Austria offers some of Europe's most rewarding mountain riding.
The Salzkammergut region combines alpine roads, crystal-clear lakes, and picturesque villages into a landscape that feels tailor-made for exploration by bicycle. Climbs are challenging without being overwhelming, roads are exceptionally maintained, and every route seems to reveal another lake, valley, or mountain backdrop.
What makes the region especially appealing is its balance. Riders can tackle ambitious mountain passes in the morning and spend the afternoon enjoying lakeside cafés, traditional Austrian hospitality, and locally produced food.
The riding rewards patience rather than aggression. Distances can be extended or shortened naturally, making the region equally attractive for ambitious cyclists and those simply looking to immerse themselves in the landscape.
And like many of the best cycling destinations, the experience extends well beyond the ride. Fresh alpine cuisine, local wines, lakeside terraces, and quiet villages encourage riders to slow down and enjoy the surroundings.
June is one of the best times to visit. Wildflowers line the roads, temperatures remain comfortable, and the peak summer crowds have yet to arrive.

June in Austria offers a reminder that some of Europe's finest cycling destinations are found just beyond the famous names.
The Thread That Connects Them
Dolomite passes. Utah gravel. Austrian lakes.
Three different ways to gain perspective.
This month's rides share a common theme: elevation—not just in geography, but in outlook.
The higher you climb, the further you can see. The goals that once felt distant begin to feel attainable. The rides that once seemed ambitious start to look inviting.
June is where cycling encourages us to think bigger.
Why June Matters
June is the gateway to summer.
It invites us to leave familiar roads behind, seek out new terrain, and embrace the kinds of rides that stay with us long after they are finished.
Whether you're climbing through the Dolomites, grinding up gravel roads in Utah, or exploring the lakes and mountains of Austria, the lesson is the same:
The best views usually require a climb.
And they're almost always worth it.
Next up: July — legendary climbs, alpine endurance, and some of the most iconic roads in cycling.
